2015 – SMART FORFOUR

May 14, 2019

Although the official presentation takes place only in October, during the Paris Motor Show, smart has already unveiled the new generations of fortwo and forfour models that arrive on the market from November. The two models are part of a strategy to revitalize the brand of urban cars of Mercedes.  The new generation of smart cars was developed in a large-scale engineering and production partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Renault, a partnership that had already borne fruit through the third generation Twingo, a “brother” of the new forfour. The new fortwo and forfour are intended to grow smart sales. Despite marketing the fortwo since 1998, the brand has struggled to surpass the average of 100,000 units per year, a figure that is one-fifth below the company’s original targets at waterproof jeep wrangler cover.

The new forfour will play an important role in increasing sales in a strategy that has been tried previously but failed and led to a restructuring of the company due to weak sales of the four-door model. The new generations of the two models and the Renault Twingo were developed from the same platform, with the goal of generating greater economies of scale, increasing sales volume and achieving higher profits. One of the great new features of the new fortwo is the placement of the engine in the rear of the vehicle, for greater optimization of space.  The new fortwo retains the same basic layout of its predecessor, with a compact two-door body and space for two passengers. The new forfour shares the same front design but has a wider wheelbase allowing for the addition of a couple more doors and space for two additional passengers. The two new smart models receive a well-defined bonnet with a significantly less inclined windshield than the previous fortwo. Yet the models retain traditional design traits of the smart as the exposed Tridion safety capsule that allows to offer both models two-tone paint options.  The new generations also have several new design innovations inspired by the latest prototypes presented by the brand, one of the best known aspects being the new grid with details in the form of honeycomb. Other new features include front headlamps and taillights with rounded and LED ends.

Despite the large number of changes of the new generation, the fortwo retains the same length as its predecessor, with 2,695 mm. Yet the wheelbase was slightly increased to 1,873 mm, 8 mm more than before. In order to improve stability at higher speeds the new fortwo is 100 mm wider than the previous generation, which also allows an increase in interior space and the axles to 1,600 mm. The height remained  intact at 1,550 mm.  Already the second generation of the forfour with a length of 3,490 mm, is 255 mm shorter than its predecessor. The two cars share the 1,660 mm of width and 1,550 mm of height. In order to reduce the development costs of the new models, smart chose not to offer a diesel engine option in both the new fortwo and the forfour. The models will initially be marketed with a Mitsubishi engine of 999 cc of 71 hp and a turbo engine of 898 cc gasoline of three cylinders, with option of 60 and 90 hp. An electric motor is due to be introduced soon through a partnership with Tesla, but it is only due in 2016.  All engines are combined with a standard five-speed manual transmission. Customers will also be able to opt for an automated six-speed dual clutch transmission, a debut in both the fortwo and the forfour. In Brazil, the two models are expected to be launched in mid-2015. As for prices, the new Fortwo will be sold for 11,000 euros in the most basic version, while Forfour will be 600 euros more expensive in all configurations.

2015 – SMART FORFOUR EDITION 1

The “Edition 1” version of the second-generation Smart ForFour was introduced by Daimler, just as Mercedes-Benz has done with its latest products. The Smart ForFour Edition 1 will be available in graphite gray combined with orange or black.  The model comes with 16-inch alloy wheels and has a lowered 10mm sports suspension, along with a black front grille and a panoramic roof. The exhaust system has been chrome-plated exhaust, while in the interior there are velor carpets, leather three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel, black and orange fabric seats and chrome door handles. Other highlights include a 3.5-inch TFT instrument panel with on-board computer, automatic temperature control and audio system, brushed stainless steel pedals with rubber studs and leather shift lever.  Smart has not mentioned how long the Edition 1 version will be available or its price, but chances are it will be sold during the first 12 months of production of the new ForFour.
